For more than a decade, the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) has been at the heart of Arts in Education (AIE) programming across Essex County, positively affecting the lives of more than 8,000 students annually.
Weinstein created “One Left Standing” during Black History Month in early 2023, when he was in the fourth grade. His teacher, Eva McNally, had set up different stations in her classroom, each dedicated to a different black artist. Henry made the piece at the station for artist Genesis Tramaine.
“I was really surprised,” said Weinstein about his reaction to the news that his artwork, a piece he named “One Left Standing,” was chosen. “I didn’t think it would be a winner and I wasn’t thinking it would win when I entered it in the contest. I was just really surprised when my parents told me it got in.”
"Jefferson Elementary School" in Maplewood, New Jersey will be renamed "Delia Bolden Elementary School," according to The School District of South Orange & Maplewood. Students reportedly helped choose the school's new name. Winne Delia Bolden, the school's new eponym, was the first black woman to graduate from the school district in 1912.
Jefferson Elementary School in New Jersey will change its name after students and staff launched a year-long effort to distance itself from its namesake, Thomas Jefferson, because of his slave ownership.
